Wyoming pack trips begin at a trailhead in the Shoshone National Forest where we will pack all the gear, food, and personal items needed for the trip on horses and mules. We will fit you to a saddle on a horse or mule and provide you with a sack lunch and a water bottle for the ride to camp.
Horse experience isn't necessary. We take many inexperienced riders and will provide instruction and guidance along the way, and our wonderful horses and mules will take good care of you, but being reasonably fit and of a semi-adventurous spirit is a must! It’s about a 3 1/2 hour ride from the trailhead to camp through rugged, beautiful terrain, and we will cross the river five times.
Our camp is situated along Cabin Creek in the Elk Fork of the North Fork of the Shoshone River. There are four canvas wall tents with two cots each, plus sleeping pads and a lantern, and can accommodate groups of six-eight guests. Most groups choose to enjoy meals around the campfire, but we have a large dining tent if the weather isn’t agreeable. There is also a cook tent, saddle tent, toilet tent, shower tent, and crew tents. We are lucky to enjoy our drinking water straight from Cabin Creek.
We will provide all the livestock and tack, the camp accommodations and gear, and we’ll cook all the meals. You are responsible for your clothes, sleeping bag, and any supplies needed for your particular endeavor. Our camp is in a Wilderness Area, and there is no internet or other mechanical advantage.
An average of 3-4 hours riding on day one is to be expected. Once we're in camp, we can take you riding as much or as little as you'd like, until it's time to ride back to the trailhead on the last day. Pack trip activities include day rides, self-guided hikes, fishing, photography, and just enjoying camp life.
Have some anglers in your group? Wyoming fishing pack trips are a great way to get off the beaten path and enjoy backcountry fly fishing. We do not supply fishing gear or licenses, but we are happy to provide help and instruction.
We love the work we do, and we look forward to helping you plan the vacation of a lifetime on a wilderness horseback pack trip in our home away from home!
